The Citadel will sponsor a special luncheon honoring all current visiting Fulbright Scholars, Students, and Exchange Teachers Saturday, April 14. Following lunch there will be a lecture by Dr. Tim Carmichael who was a Fulbright Scholar from The College of Charleston to Ethiopia in 2005.

For the 2006-07 academic year, S.C. educational institutions, including Clemson University, the College of Charleston, Trident Technical College, the University of South Carolina-Columbia, are hosting 21 Visiting Fulbright students, Scholars and Exchange Teachers. These international visitors hail from Afghanistan, Argentina, Bahrain, Barbados, Cambodia, China, Columbia, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Germany, Macedonia, Malaysia, Senegal, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, and Ukraine.

The Fulbright Association supports and promotes the Fulbright Program, an international educational and cultural exchange initiative created in 1946 by legislation sponsored by the late Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas and administered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. There are Fulbright exchanges between the United States and more than 150 other countries. More than 250,000 Fulbright grants have been awarded to individuals throughout the world. Approximately 330 Fulbright alumni currently reside in South Carolina.

The S.C. chapter is one of 53 Fulbright Association chapters nationwide. Chapters are organized locally by Fulbright Association members to provide opportunities, through volunteer service, for continued involvement with the Fulbright program and with other alumni and visiting Fulbright students, teachers, and scholars currently in the United States. The S.C. chapter has more than 85 members and hosts programs through the academic year.
